What is "lifestyle" photography? In short, I think about my photography as a way to connect with people and capture memories. When I look through the lens, I'm looking to capture the tender touches, uproarious laughter, and mundane glances you share with your loved ones. Breaking away from the cookie cutter posed family portrait, I use creative direction combined with true engagement between my subjects to bring the emotions of your relationships to life. My creative nonfiction (essays and memoir) and nonfiction (Black and Queer theory, oral histories) work are centered around what it means to live and exist in space as a contended body and the experience of living on the brink of invisibility, witnessing oneself being written out of the archive. I write about being a Black, queer, Jewish woman/daughter/mother, being the donor conceived child of two moms, Black mothering women’s insistence on continuing to exist and create, societal mis/conceptions of family, and what it means to exist in the world with a body and/or family that is deemed impossible (Black Jew, no father, etc.). In my writing, I leverage oral histories and my memories to illustrate moments, which I intersperse with interrogations of language and the ways it is used, misused, or fashioned for violence.

I am currently working on my first manuscript, a memoir that explores builds on the aforementioned themes. At its core, my manuscript contends with challenging questions about the meaning of family: who gets to have one? Who gets to define the boundaries? Who is in mine?

Reading is my happy place, and lucky for me my daughter is already a quickly developing bookworm. My love of books consists of reading, listening to audio books, and raving about The StoryGraph. I'm an avid baker and a sometimes seller of baked goods. Like my other creative pursuits, I bake (and cook) to connect with others over the breaking of bread and as a way of expressing my love. After much encouragement from friends and family, I've launched a pop-up baked good delivery business. I'll continue coming out with new flavors for you to savor and, although you may not want to share, a box of cookies baked with love from the kitchen of AmaniAriel is always a great gift.
